Issue Brief 20-11
April 27, 2020
Summary

The Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act (P.L. 116-136) provides nearly $3 billion for the Governor’s Emergency Education Relief (GEER) Fund. The Department of Education (ED) initiated a streamlined application process for these formula grants on April 14, 2020. The deadline for states to apply is June 1, 2020; however, ED will process applications as they are received and funds will be released on a rolling, expedited basis.

This brief provides an overview of requirements, allowed uses, and related details of the fund. Information on other grants to states in the CARES Act (including additional funding for education) can be found in FFIS Budget Brief 20-14 and COVID-19 state allocations spreadsheet.
