SAFETEA-LU Reauthorization Includes Several Non-Transportation Provisions

On June 29, 2012, the president signed the Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century Act (P.L. 112-141), which provides a two-year reauthorization of the Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users (SAFETEA-LU, P.L. 109-59). The bulk of the legislation reauthorizes and reforms the nation’s transportation programs. However, it also includes other provisions, such as a funding cap for Abandoned Mine Land (AML) grants; a revision to the disaster-recovery Medicaid matching rate formula; assistance for Gulf Coast restoration; and program extensions for Payments In Lieu of Taxes (PILT), Secure Rural Schools (SRS), and Sports Fish Restoration and Boating Safety.
